About

Alik Farber, MD, MBA, FACS, is Chief of Surgery for the Boston Medical Center Health System and Surgeon-in-Chief at Boston Medical Center (BMC). He is also the James Utley Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.

Dr. Farber received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed general surgery residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a fellowship in vascular surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Nashua, New Hampshire, and a fellowship in endovascular surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. He also holds a master of business administration degree (MBA) from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University.

Dr. Farber began his career as a vascular surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, before being recruited to BMC and Boston University in 2005. He is an expert in vascular and endovascular intervention to treat peripheral arterial disease, open and endovascular abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, the treatment of diabetic foot issues, carotid artery surgery and stenting, and dialysis access.

A prolific researcher, Dr. Farber has published more than 280 peer-reviewed articles and has served as a principal investigator (PI) for a number of clinical trials, including the landmark BEST-CLI (Best Endovascular versus Best Surgical Therapy in Patients with Critical Limb Ischemia) trial, an international, multi-center, randomized controlled trial. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
