Robert M. Stern, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist at Boston Medical Center – Brighton (BMC Brighton), where he serves as Medical Director of Psychiatric Services and of Seton 5, BMC Brighton’s 31-bed inpatient unit. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.

Dr. Stern received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in New York City and completed his psychiatry residency training at Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dr. Stern is a committed community psychiatrist. Before joining BMC Brighton, he served as Director of Adult Psychiatric Services at Somerville Mental Health Clinic, Executive Director of the Eliot Community Mental Health Center in Lexington, and then for many years as the Director of Behavioral Health Services and Chief of the Department of Psychiatry at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts, as well as keeping an active private practice in psychiatry. He is a Community Board Member at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.

Dr. Stern’s clinical and research interests focus on the care of those with serious mental illness. Other areas of interest include trauma and trauma-informed care, dual diagnosis, and the impact of the “social surround.”

As faculty for the BMC Brighton Psychiatry Residency Program, Dr. Stern believes the training of residents, medical students from both Tufts and Boston University, NP, and PA students in a team-oriented environment is a priority.
