Ekaterina “Kathy” Petersen, MSN, NP, is a board-certified family nurse practitioner specializing in primary care. Her approach emphasizes collaboration, education, and personalized preventive care to help patients achieve and maintain their best health.
Fluent in Russian, Kathy is committed to improving access and comfort for patients from diverse backgrounds and providing care that reflects the whole person—social, emotional, and physical.
Before joining Boston Medical Center – Brighton (BMC Brighton)’s primary care practice at 11 Nevins Street, Kathy worked in emergency and pediatric nursing care at Winchester Hospital, Spaulding Hospital, and Cambridge Health Alliance, and served as a clinical Nursing Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Boston. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Columbia University and completed her Family Nurse Practitioner training at UMass Boston.
Why did you choose family medicine?
I’ve always loved the family unit. When I was in the emergency room, I was geared toward and focused on the family model, and I found myself doing a lot better with families.
Being able to take care of the entire family as a unit as opposed to just the one patient.
Being able to see mom and dad, not just the child, to fully understand the difficulties they face as a family. I’m really focused on that kind of perspective.
How do you collaborate with other specialists to ensure a thorough and timely diagnosis for patients?
I am very big on communication. Real-time collaboration, with a focus on care management, is key to knowing what the plan of care is going to be.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I have a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old. We do a lot of camping and hiking, and different activities. Being outside and being active are two important parts of my life.
Prior to my career in medicine, I had a short stint as a professional ballet dancer. I try to get to a class every now and then, but I don’t dance as much as I used to.
