Provider Spotlight: Erica Mintzer, MD

Erica Mintzer, MD, family medicine physician and Medical Director of the BMC Brighton primary care practice at 11 Nevins Street.
Erica Mintzer, MD, is a family medicine physician. She treats everyone from infants to the elderly, including prenatal care, and takes pride in caring for the entire family unit. She is a fluent Spanish speaker and has a passion for working with and caring for immigrant populations.
She attended medical school at Yale School of Medicine and completed her residency at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.
Why did you choose to specialize in family medicine?
As a family medicine physician, I specialize in being a generalist. I can take care of most patients who walk in the door, and know when to refer to specialists when needed. I see everyone across the age spectrum, from infants to the elderly.
I love to take care of the entire family because it gives me insight into their families, community, and culture. I also appreciate the continuity of getting to know people over time and following them through their life cycle.
What’s your philosophy of care?
I partner with the patients and families that I work with. I start with understanding their goals for their health. I share the information they need to make informed decisions about their health. I aim to empower them to make their own decisions.
What have you enjoyed about working at BMC Brighton?
I have received a warm welcome here at BMC Brighton since we opened our clinic in November. I value the relationships that I form with specialists. I know that the BMC specialists feel as much ownership and care for their patients as we do as primary care providers, so whether it’s formal consults or having a conversation if needed, I enjoy working as a team.

You have experience doing group medical visits. Can you share more about that aspect of the care you provide?
Instead of seeing a patient for 20 minutes or so, I get to see a group of 8 to 10 people, from anywhere between 90 minutes to two hours. I have facilitated group visits for prenatal care, well-baby care, and diabetes management.
During the group visit we provide all indicated medical care, and patients get time to interact, share information, and support each other.
What are your passions outside of medicine?
I am busy with my wonderful family. I love hiking, biking, and being outside. We have a community garden plot in our neighborhood. I enjoy coaching my kid’s soccer team as well.
