St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center
Neonatal Care
The level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center is one of only a handful of units in Boston that provides the most advanced care and technology for premature and critically ill newborns.
St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center offers world class care for newborns. Our NICU is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by Steward Medical Group physicians.
The Neonatal Team
The NICU is staffed by board-certified neonatologists and licensed neonatal nurse practitioners. Other members of the care team include:
- Development therapists
- Experienced nursing staff
- Nurse educator
- Nutritionists
- Pastoral care
- Pharmacists
- Respiratory therapists
- Social workers
Subspecialty Services
If a St. Elizabeth’s patient requires the most critical care, they have access to the specialty services offered through our clinical collaboration. Our physicians, nurses, and other staff members work closely with the parents so they can participate in their baby’s care in the unit and feel confident about caring for their newborn at home.
Subspecialty services include cardiology, cardiac surgery, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, hematology, immunology, infectious disease, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pulmonology and urology.
Neonatal Transport
An important part of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center is neonatal transport to and from the medical center. A team of neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, and neonatal nurses travel to referring hospitals to transport sick newborns to the NICU at St. Elizabeth’s. Through a collaboration with Armstrong Ambulance, a dedicated ambulance with state-of-the-art equipment is used to transport newborns.
