What does a primary care doctor do?

A primary care doctor is your main partner in staying healthy. They help with everyday health needs, like check-ups, vaccines, and treating common illnesses. They also help manage ongoing conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, and they can connect you with specialists if needed.

Think of your primary care doctor as your first stop for care and someone who knows your health history.

 

Can I go to urgent care instead of my primary care provider?

Urgent care can help when you have a health issue that needs attention quickly but isn’t an emergency. It’s useful for some issues, such as minor injuries, sore throats, or ear infections, especially when your primary care provider (PCP) isn’t available.

However, your PCP knows your full medical history and is the best person to manage your overall health. They can help prevent problems, follow up on test results, and coordinate care with other specialists. For ongoing or non-urgent health needs, it’s best to see your PCP.

In many cases, it can be cost out-of-pocket to see your PCP than urgent care.

 

Do I need a primary care doctor if I’m healthy?

Yes. Even if you’re not currently sick, having a primary care doctor is important.  Your primary care doctor helps you stay healthy with regular checkups, catches problems early, and keeps your vaccinations up to date. They offer advice on healthy habits and are there for you when you do get sick or injured.

Having a trusted doctor in place makes it easier to get care quickly—and many specialists require a referral from your PCP, so it’s helpful to have one established.

 

Do I need a referral from my PCP to see a specialist?

This primarily depends on your insurance policy and the specialist’s practice. Some insurance plans require a referral to cover the cost of specialist visits. If you’re not sure, check with your primary care provider (PCP) or your health insurance plan.

Referrals also help ensure you get the right care and that your specialist has the information they need. Your PCP stays involved, guiding you to the right specialist and coordinating your overall care.

 

How hard is it to actually get in to see a doctor in Boston?
