Boston Medical Center – Brighton
Pain Management Fellowship
Fellowship One Year (PGY-5)
The trainees in the Pain Management Fellowship Program, in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at Boston Medical Center – Brighton, will gain rich experience in the evaluation and management of acute, chronic, cancer, and non-cancer pain in the adult patient in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
A Well-Rounded Experience
In addition to rotations through BMC Brighton’s neurology and psychiatry departments, we have an established rotation at Boston Medical Center for physical medicine and rehabilitation training.
A Multilingual, Multiethnic Patient Population
Our trainees benefit from caring for those who may experience and express their pain differently, and have different expectations regarding treatment.

Curriculum Details
The Pain Management Fellowship provides immersive clinical training, structured educational experiences, and opportunities for research and teaching within a multidisciplinary pain program.
Clinical Rotations
The clinical outpatient training in interventional pain is solely at the Center for Pain Management at BMC Brighton.
Trainees are assigned to a particular attending who supervises them for the day on a one-to-one basis. In conjunction with the attending physician, the trainee sees the scheduled new patients, follow-up patients, and patients requiring procedures.
Other rotations are established with BMC Brighton neurology and psychiatry, as well as at Boston Medical Center (the main campus in Boston’s South End neighborhood) for physical medicine and rehabilitation training.
Patient Evaluations & Consults
The trainee plays a major role as a consultant to other specialties. Primary care physicians and specialties such as neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, and oncology provide the majority of requests for consultations.
While some of these consultations are done on an inpatient basis, most are outpatients.
For inpatient consultations, trainees are assigned on a rotating on-call basis to the Pain Management Consult Service. They see, evaluate, and manage patients with intractable pain on the medical and surgical wards.
Evaluation of New Patients
For new patients, the trainee takes a careful history and performs a physical exam appropriate for the pain complaint. The trainee presents this information to the attending physician, who sees the patient and confirms the important aspects of the history and physical exam findings.
The attending physician helps the trainee develop an assessment and therapeutic plan and, together, the trainee and the attending physician discuss the plan of treatment with the patient.
Follow-up Visits
For follow-up visits, the trainee obtains updated information from the patient regarding changes in general health, new social stressors, and their response to the previously prescribed therapy. The trainee performs a directed physical exam, subsequently confirmed by the attending.
This information is presented to the attending staff and they work together to develop an assessment and plan.
Together, the trainee and the attending physician present the plan to the patient. As needed, the trainee provides additional clarifying instructions and teaching to the patient.
