What cancer screenings should I or my loved ones have at different ages, including mammograms and colonoscopies?

We can help you stay up to date on the screenings that are right for you.

In general, colon cancer screening often begins at age 45, and many women begin mammograms around age 40, though this can vary based on your risk factors.

Based on your age, health history, and personal risk, our team will recommend when to start screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies and how often to have them.

What happens after I’m diagnosed with cancer?

Every diagnosis is different, and what happens next varies depending on your individual health needs, including your type of cancer, overall health, and personal preferences. No matter what, our team will guide you through next steps. We’ll review your results, explain your diagnosis, and talk through your treatment options together. From there, we’ll build a care plan with you and support you at every step.

How do I choose the right oncologist for my care?

At BMC South, our oncology team has experience treating a wide range of cancers, and we’ll match you with a provider based on their expertise in your specific type of cancer and treatment needs. Our focus is on making sure you feel comfortable, informed, and supported. You’ll have a team that listens to you, answers your questions, and helps you make confident decisions about your care.

When should I see a hematologist?

If you have a blood-related condition, like leukemia, your care team may connect you with one of our hematology specialists. We’ll help coordinate your care and make sure you’re seeing the right provider for your needs.

When should I consider getting a second opinion?

It’s completely okay to seek a second opinion at any point, and we support you in making the decision that feels right for you. If you were diagnosed elsewhere and are looking for another perspective, our team can review your diagnosis and work with you to plan treatment. No matter what, we want you to feel confident moving forward.

How can I stay in touch with my doctors?

The best way to stay connected with your care team is through MyChart. MyChart allows you to send messages, view test results, manage appointments, and access your health information all in one place.

What financial assistance options are available for cancer care?

We understand that cancer care can bring financial concerns, and you don’t have to navigate that alone. Our team can help you review your insurance coverage, explain expected costs, and answer any billing questions.

We can also connect you with financial assistance programs, payment plans, and support services that may be available to you. Our goal is to make sure you have clear information and the support you need throughout your care.

How can I support and care for someone with cancer?

Caring for someone with cancer can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. We’re here to offer guidance on what to expect, how to help day-to-day, and ways to support your loved one throughout treatment.

Just as importantly, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Taking breaks and asking for help can make a big difference, as can a support group or having your own support system.
