Answers to Some of Your Top Questions about Primary Care at BMC South
You may have questions or concerns about your health. This list of common questions can help guide you. The answers give general information, but everyone’s situation is different. For advice about your own health, make an appointment with your provider.
What happened to Revere Medical—Bridgewater Internal Medicine? Did it become part of BMC South?
Yes. Revere Medical—Bridgewater Internal Medicine is now part of BMC Health System and is called BMC Health Primary Care (Whitman). You’ll continue to see the same trusted providers, now supported by the BMC Health System.
What does a “primary care” doctor do, and do I need one?
A primary care provider (PCP) is your main point of contact for your health. They help with routine checkups, preventive care, managing ongoing conditions, and addressing new concerns. Having a primary care provider can make it easier to stay on top of your health and get connected to the right specialty care when you need it.
Should I go to primary care, urgent care, or an emergency room?
It depends on what you’re experiencing.
- Primary care is best for routine visits, preventive care, and ongoing concerns.
- Urgent care is helpful for non–life-threatening issues that need prompt attention, like minor injuries or infections. We offer urgent care for current patients at our facility.
- The emergency room is for serious or life-threatening conditions, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or severe injuries.
If you’re experiencing a potentially serious situation, get to an emergency room immediately.
What is the difference between a Nurse Practitioner (NP) and a Doctor of Medicine (MD)?
Both nurse practitioners and medical doctors are trained to diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, and manage your care. They can both perform exams, order tests, and help you manage ongoing health concerns.
The main difference is their training. Nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses who are trained with a strong focus on patient-centered care, prevention, and education. Medical doctors complete medical school and residency training, with a focus on diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions.
At BMC Health System, nurse practitioners and medical doctors work closely together as part of your care team. This team-based approach means you have access to the expertise and support you need, with providers who communicate and coordinate your care every step of the way.
How do I choose the best primary care provider for me?
The best provider for you is someone you feel comfortable with and can communicate with openly. You may want to think about a provider’s availability and their experience with your specific health needs.
Our team can help you find a provider who is a good fit.
Is BMC Health Primary Care (Whitman) currently accepting new patients?
Yes, our Whitman primary care location is currently accepting new patients. Our team can help you get started and schedule your first appointment.
Do I need a referral to see a specialist?
This depends on your personal insurance plan. Some plans require a referral from your primary care provider, while others allow you to schedule directly with a specialist.
If you’re unsure, we can help you understand your coverage and next steps.
How can I stay in touch with my doctor’s office?
