Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

This one-year, AGCME-accredited program, offered by Boston Medical Center – Brighton’s Department of Cardiovascular Medicine in conjunction with the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, provides highly specialized, state-of-the-art training in interventional cardiology.

The goal of the program is for trainees to become competent in performing the entire spectrum of cardiovascular interventional procedures, including but not limited to: coronary artery balloon angioplasty and stenting, atherectomy, intracoronary physiology and imaging, and mechanical circulatory support. Trainees will also work towards obtaining competency in non-coronary cardiac and peripheral interventions. Heavy emphasis is placed on both pre- and postoperative evaluation and management.

Program Overview

Our program combines a one-year, ACGME-accredited interventional cardiology fellowship with the opportunity to receive training in endovascular and structural heart disease (SHD) interventions.

Boston Medical Center – Brighton (formerly known as St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center), a Boston University teaching hospital, is a 291-bed academic hospital and tertiary center known nationally for providing exceptional cardiovascular care. Located within the major Boston metropolitan area, BMC Brighton serves diverse, high-acuity patients and provides them with access to some of Boston’s most advanced treatments, clinical trials, and cutting-edge technology.

We offer a high procedural volume: fellows perform more than 300 to 400 interventions annually, including complex coronary, peripheral, and structural cases.

Curriculum Details

The curriculum spans several aspects of interventional cardiology from pathophysiology to psychomotor skills of procedural practice. Specific topics include:

Basic Science, Imaging, and Pharmacology

Basic Science

  • Coronary anatomy and physiology, including:
    • Alterations in coronary flow due to obstruction
    • Assessment of flow dynamics
    • Effects of arterial spasm or microembolization
    • Function of the collateral circulation
    • Lesion features and their significance to intervention
    • Location and distribution of vascular segments
  • Hematology: The clotting cascade, platelet function, thrombolysis and methods for altering clot formation
  • Vascular biology: The process of plaque formation, vascular injury, vasoreactivity, vascular healing and restenosis

Imaging

  • Identification of anatomic features and visualization of lesion morphologies by angiography and intravascular imaging (IVUS, OCT)
  • Radiation physics, radiation risks and injury, and radiation safety, including methods to control radiation exposure for patients, physicians, and staff

Pharmacology

  • Biologic effects and appropriate use of angiographic contrast agents
  • Biologic effects and appropriate use of vasoactive agents, antiplatelet drugs, thrombolytics, anticoagulants, and antiarrhythmics

Tariq M. Bhat, MD, FACC, FSCAI, RPVI, is a board-certified interventional cardiologist at Boston Medical Center – Brighton (BMC Brighton), where he directs the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Medicine, Structural Heart Disease Program, and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program. He also practices at Boston Medical Center – South (BMC South) in Brockton, Massachusetts. He is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Bhat earned his medical degree from Government Medical College Srinagar (GMC Srinagar) in Srinagar, India, and completed his internal medicine residency training at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) in Staten Island, New York, through Hofstra North Shore–LIJ School of Medicine (now the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell), serving as Chief Resident in his final year. He stayed at SIUH to complete a fellowship in cardiovascular disease. He subsequently moved to Boston and completed fellowships in structural heart disease, vascular and endovascular medicine, and interventional cardiology through Tufts University School of Medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center (now BMC Brighton).

Dr. Bhat specializes in minimally invasive, catheter-based interventional procedures to treat conditions including structural heart disease, coronary artery disease, and peripheral artery and venous diseases. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI).

Ready to Apply?

All Interventional Cardiology Fellows will start at the PGY-7 level, regardless of prior training.
